Student Emergency Fund

As RMU responds to the constant changes as a result of COVID-19, many of RMU's students are facing a different set of challenges. From traveling home, food insecurity, technology needs, and unexpected medical bills - these 和 other issues may prevent a student from completing their degree. These difficulties are not only in the immediate future - t这里 will be long-term needs to be met as a result of this global crisis. Your gift to the Student Emergency Fund will allow RMU to help students as they move toward their degree.


The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress and signed into law to provide economic relief from the Covid-19 pandemic. One section of the 关心行动 established the Higher Education Emergency Relief fund, which provides money for colleges and universities -- including RMU -- to distribute directly to students as emergency financial aid and to  and sent money to schools to use for emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the p和emic.

July 28: Important Message to RMU 学生们

Dear 学生们,

To help ensure a safe return to campus, Robert Morris University is strongly encouraging all students to self-quarantine for 14 days prior to their return to campus. This means that you should stay within your residence 和 limit contacts in order to lower your risk of exposure to COVID-19. 

In the case of resident students, this would be two weeks before your move-in date. For commuters, it would be two weeks before the date of your first in-person class. We ask you to do the following:

  • Monitor your health daily for symptoms such as fever or chills, persistent cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.  Please refer to the U.S. Center for Disease Control 和 Prevention (CDC) guidelines: //
  • Modify your exercise routines by maintaining a physical distance of 6 feet, when possible, or by wearing a face covering when 6 feet of separation is unlikely.      
  • Wear a face covering 和 maintain a safe physical distance around any household member who is not self-quarantining. 

We ask that you avoid high-risk behaviors such as patronizing bars and restaurants; attending indoor events of more than 25 people; and attending outdoor events of more than 50 people. And we ask that you please practice the guidelines provided by the CDC and your state and county health department, including maintaining 6 feet of physical distance between you and others, wearing a face covering, and washing your hands often. We will encourage faculty 和 staff to join students in doing this, to help create the safest environment for the RMU community. 

If you have previously tested positive for COVID-19 or experienced symptoms of infection, you must follow all self-quarantine protocols in accordance with CDC guidelines, since the science around immunity 和 reinfection as it relates to this virus remains inconclusive.  If you fall into either of these categories, please contact the university so that we can provide you with the appropriate guidance. If this self-quarantine request now requires that you need to request a change to your scheduled move-in date to your residence hall, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 412-397-5252.

July 24: Fall 2020 Update

Dear RMU students,

In late June, Robert Morris University announced that we plan to resume in-person instruction and reopen our residential campus on time for the Fall 2020 semester. I know that you have many questions about what life will be like on campus 和 how we will manage the classroom experience, given the precautions required to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

We are currently finalizing our detailed reopening plan, which will be made available to all students and families in early August. Given governmental requirements and public health guidance, our plan will continue to evolve and we will share updates with the campus community and families. In preparation for the release of our plan, I would like to provide you with an update on w这里 we now st和.

  • Fall classes will be held both in physically distanced on-ground classes 和 online. Some courses initially scheduled for on-ground instruction have been moved to online delivery. This was necessary to ensure that classroom space was available to deliver other courses in a physically distanced manner. It is our intent that all students desiring classroom instruction in the fall have the opportunity to experience as many of their classes as possible in that format, while properly addressing health concerns and maximizing safety. All online courses will follow the high quality st和ards that have been established by RMU.
  • 学生们 have the option of replacing all on-ground classes with online courses if they prefer to have a full courseload online, even if they will be residing on campus. A sufficient number of fully online courses across programs will be on the schedule to allow for this option. As long as students retain full-time status — at least 12 credits for undergraduate 和 6 credits for graduate students — their financial aid package 和 tuition rate will not change.
  • 学生们 should wait until early August to make changes to their schedules. Because new courses are still being added, it is recommended that students wait until early August to see all available courses and their configuration before attempting to change class schedules. At that time, students will be able to contact their Success Coach or Academic Department Head (or 招生 Counselor for incoming freshmen and transfer students) for assistance in adjusting their schedule. They will also be able to change their schedule using Sentry drop 和 add features.
  • On-ground classroom instruction will end at Thanksgiving break, and those classes will be completed through virtual instruction 和 exams. At this time, we plan to keep residence halls open until the end of the semester with dining services provided for students who choose to remain on campus. However, all students who travel home for the Thanksgiving break will be encouraged to stay home for the last two weeks of the semester.
  • Operational guidelines are being finalized to meet physical distancing requirements. The health and well-being of our community is important to all of us. The new guidelines will be available in early August and will include requiring community members to wear a mask when entering a campus building, walking in hallways, sitting in public spaces 和 common areas, as well as maintaining physical distancing of 6 feet.
  • Residence halls will be open, de-densified, 和 operating with new safety protocols. A move-in guide 和 residence life information have been sent to all residential students. A new 2020-2021 Guide to Residence Living with detailed living-learning information will be sent to all residents in early August.
  • Academic support services will continue to be available to all students. We are enhancing our academic support services to include a robust online peer and professional tutoring service. 学生们 will have access to their Success Coach 和 will be provided with the appropriate accommodation services.

June 25: Update on Fall 2020 Schedule

Dear students, faculty, 和 staff:

Last month, Robert Morris University announced that we plan to resume in-person instruction and re-open our residential campus on time for the Fall 2020 semester. I know that you have many questions about what life will be like on campus 和 how we will manage the classroom experience given the precautions required to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

This will be the first in a series of communications to provide you with specific information regarding the return to campus, the measures we are taking to promote a safe and healthy campus, 和 what we will ask you to do as a community to assist in that effort. 

Today I wish to share that the first day of classes will take place on Monday, August 31, 2020, as originally scheduled, with in-person instruction continuing until the Thanksgiving break. The final two weeks of the semester, including finals, will be conducted remotely. This will allow students who travel home for Thanksgiving to avoid returning and risk transmission of the virus, 和 allow the campus to close if necessary in the event of a regional or national spike in cases. 

In making this adjustment to the fall calendar, RMU is following the guidance of public health officials and best practices in higher education. Our return to in-person instruction is contingent on Allegheny County remaining in the Green Phase of Gov. Tom Wolf’s process for reopening Pennsylvania, and we will strive to ad这里 to the requirements and guidelines of the Allegheny County Health Department, Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control 和 Prevention.

May 12: Plans for Fall 2020

Dear students, faculty 和 staff:

We have just completed an unprecedented semester in the history of Robert Morris University and, indeed, a spring that was unprecedented in the history of our nation. I wish to commend our students for the grit and resilience they demonstrated in completing their coursework under the most difficult of circumstances, 和 I offer my special congratulations to the Class of 2020 for their singular achievement. 

I also would like to thank the faculty for transitioning so quickly and effectively to remote instruction, and to the staff who continued to support our students, both on campus and off, providing many of the services to which they had been accustomed. Much remains unknown about the course of the Covid-19 pandemic and what if any additional restrictions on in-person activity may be in place throughout the summer months and into the fall. We must remain flexible to allow for multiple scenarios, 和 we are preparing for every conceivable contingency.  

Nonetheless, we plan on opening as scheduled on August 28 to provide a modified yet vibrant living 和 learning environment. To do so, we will utilize physical distancing measures, health and wellness monitoring, and other requirements to ensure the health and well-being of the entire campus community. We will consistently follow guidelines, policies, and requirements set forth by the Allegheny County Health Department, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control 和 Prevention. Our plan is contingent on Allegheny County moving into the “Green Phase” under Gov. Tom Wolf’s process for reopening Pennsylvania. 

As a reminder, RMU is offering a complete schedule of fully online courses this summer, with many of the same tuition discounts that are available every summer. You can learn more at Nonessential employees who have been working remotely should continue to do so until notified otherwise.

May 7: Update to COVID-19 政策 & Procedures

Recently, Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine ordered that employers and employees take certain actions and institute certain procedures to provide a safe workplace for essential employees and other individuals permitted on-site. We would like to make you aware of the procedures required by Dr. Levine’s order 和 how RMU has instituted them, many of which were in place prior to the order. As a reminder, all non-essential employees should continue to work from home until further notice.


  • In addition to our pre-existing cleaning protocols, we have implemented additional protocols to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces routinely in accordance with U.S. Centers for Disease Controls 和 Prevention (CDC) guidelines. 


  • When practical, we will look to stagger work start 和 stop times to prevent gatherings of large groups entering or leaving RMU. 
  • We will provide a sufficient amount of space for employee breaks, keeping in mind the 6 feet of distance required between employees. It is important that employees do not sit face-to-face / across from one another during breaks. We will also stagger breaks as necessary to avoid large groups.
  • We will require employees to maintain 6 feet of physical distance in common areas, 和 limit the number of employees at any one time in those areas to maintain that physical distance.


  • Access to facilities with soap and water, hand sanitizers, 和 disinfectant products are provided.


  • Non-essential visitors are currently prohibited from entering RMU.


  • As a reminder, to help facilitate requests to visit campus in Moon Township, the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island, and the Heinz 57 Center in downtown Pittsburgh during this time, we have created a Google Form for non-essential staff 和 faculty to fill out in advance when they need to retrieve something or perform a task on campus. The form can be found 这里. 
  • If you cannot access your workspace using your RMU ID Card during your approved trip to campus, please contact RMU PD at 412-397-2424 和 a police officer will assist you.  


  • All employees are required to wear masks while on campus. We have provided detailed instructions for mask use below.
  • Masks are being provided to all essential employees and any non-essential employee that needs to access campus. If you are an essential employee 和 have not received a mask, please visit Colonial Central located in the Facilities Service Center to pick one up. Colonial Central is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
  • If you are a non-essential employee and have an approved visit to campus, please remember to wear your mask.  If you do not have your own face mask, you will need to make arrangements to pick one up from Colonial Central once your visit has been approved. Colonial Central is located in the Facilities Service Center at 300 Grant Drive (just past the Giant Eagle plaza) 和 is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please be sure to call Colonial Central 412-397-4343 before your arrival. 

Putting on a Mask

  • Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap 和 water. 
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the face covering. Make sure t这里 are no gaps between your face 和 the cloth face covering.
  • Avoid touching the mask while using it, if you do wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based h和 rub. Be aware that if you touch your face or adjust your face covering after you have touched other objects, you can easily spread germs to your face. 
  • Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp 和 do not re-use single-use masks.

Removing a Mask

  • To remove the mask, remove it from behind, do not touch the front of the mask.
  • Individuals should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth when removing their cloth face covering and wash h和s immediately after removing. 
  • Remove it from behind the ears and try not to touch the front of the cloth face covering or your face.  Once you remove the cloth face covering, you should discard it immediately or put it in the laundry and wash your h和s right away. 
  • Clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap 和 water.


  • Masks should fit snugly around the mouth 和 nose, but still be comfortable.
  • Masks should be secured with ties or ear loops.
  • Mask should allow for breathing without restriction.
  • If the mask has a metal wire it should be fitted snugly to the bridge of the nose.
  • Disposable masks are recommended for single use only 和 should be disposed of after each use.

Caring for a Cloth Face Covering

  • Cloth masks should be routinely washed depending on the frequency of use. 
  • A washing machine should suffice in properly washing a cloth face covering. 
  • Masks should be able to be laundered 和 machine dried without damage or change to shape.


  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed h和s.
  • Avoid close contact with others, 和 avoid contact altogether with those who are sick.
  • Be vigilant about practicing personal hygiene (don’t refill cups, don’t share utensils).
  • Cover your mouth 和 nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.


  • We will comply with the Order’s additional requirements if we discover that RMU has been exposed to a person who is a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19.

Frequently Asked Questions

Since the final two weeks of the Fall 2020 semester, including finals, will be conducted remotely, will the university be offering any housing 和 dining rebates or refunds?
Residence halls will remain open and dining services will be available for the full term of the semester. Other campus amenities also will remain open and available on campus. T这里fore, housing 和 dining rebates or refunds will not be provided as a result of the modification to the university’s Fall 2020 academic calendar.  
Will students be required to move back home at Thanksgiving break? 
At this time we do not plan to require students to leave campus between Thanksgiving and Winter Break. 学生们 who remain in their residence over holiday breaks will not be charged any additional fees, in accordance with long-st和ing university policy. 
Will RMU offer any tuition cost adjustments because the final two weeks of the Fall 2020 semester, including finals, will be conducted remotely?
Although we are moving to remote instruction for a portion of the Fall 2020 semester, we will continue to provide a high-quality academic experience. 学生们 will receive the same financial aid package they would have otherwise 和 pay the same tuition rate.

Why do I have to pay full tuition when online classes cost less?

Although we are moving to online instruction, or other course delivery methods, we will continue to provide a high-quality academic experience. While some online courses at the university do cost less than on-ground courses, they also come with less financial aid. 学生们 will continue to receive the same financial aid as they would under normal circumstances.

I am transferring, can I get my credit refunded?

If you are not planning to return for the fall 2020 semester, credits can be used in Summer 2020 towards an RMU course that may be able to be transferred to another institution. The credit will not expire, so you will be able to use it at any point in the future should you choose to take a course at RMU. 

As an RMU employee, how can I get my paycheck direct deposited?

In light of the current situation regarding COVID-19, we are requesting that all current employees receive salary payments by direct deposit. Please see the Direct Deposit Change Form for your use. Please complete the form 和 send it by secure email at from your RMU email. Please see these instructions for sending the email securely. If you choose to continue to receive paper paychecks, we have full expectation of preparing 和 mailing the paychecks as scheduled, but we cannot guarantee t这里 will not be delays outside of our control, either through the US Postal Service or office availability of your selected bank.

If I am an employee who is feeling heightened stress or anxiety about COVID-19, w这里 can I turn?

We encourage you to make use of the university's Employee Assistance Program by calling 1-844-833-0527 or going to, using company code RMU.

Will I qualify for funding under the federal 关心行动?

The 关心行动 does provide for college students to receive federal funds to compensate for emergency expenses incurred as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are working with federal and state officials to develop a process for receiving 和 distributing those funds to eligible students in accordance with the law.

Are alternatives to cloth face masks permitted, such as plastic face shields, particularly for those who have respiratory challenges?

RMU is requiring that all students, faculty, and staff wear cloth face coverings in accordance with guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control 和 Prevention (CDC). Will employees be penalized if we have to be quarantined beyond any sick leave to which we are entitled?

No. In addition to their PTO entitlement, full-time staff members will be granted an additional two weeks of COVID-19 emergency leave between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021, for use as needed. 学院 members exhibiting COVID-like symptoms will be provided collegial coverage of their classes as necessary and as proscribed by their contracts and any applicable memorandum of underst和ing.

Will faculty 和 staff be able to work remotely after Thanksgiving break, since the reminder of the semester will take place virtually?

Unless they are instructed otherwise by their supervisors, all faculty and staff will be permitted to work remotely after Thanksgiving break, and the university is encouraging remote work and rotational work schedules for staff whenever possible throughout the fall semester. 学院 和 staff who travel over Thanksgiving break should not return to campus for the remainder of the semester. What kind of considerations are being given on how to minimize the impact of campus reopening to the surrounding community?


Is t这里 a protocol in place for faculty and staff who are in an at-risk category (or who live with someone who is at risk) 和 may be reluctant to come back to the physical campus? Will they be able to work remotely?

Some staff members will be asked to work a partially remote schedule to decrease campus density. Staff members should check with their supervisors to confirm Fall 2020 scheduling expectations for their respective departments.

What is the university's legal liability in the event of an outbreak? Will students/faculty/staff be required to sign a waiver in order to come to campus?


How should managers h和le staff who may live out of state with the current two week quarantine requirement?


Are faculty expected to wear face masks while they are teaching?

Yes. Face masks will be required by all students, faculty, staff, and visitors while in public settings and common spaces, which includes classrooms 和 conference rooms.

Will students be getting tested as they're moving into the residence halls, 和 are employees being encouraged to get tested before their return date?

According to the CDC, not everyone needs to be tested for COVID-19. RMU’s current strategy includes viral testing for two groups within the campus population including: (1) those who are symptomatic for COVID-19 和 (2) those asymptomatic with recent known or suspected exposure to COVID-19. In addition, student-athletes will be subject to testing protocols as outlined in the RMU 竞技 Return to Campus Policy 和 Procedures Manual.

Asymptomatic individuals with recent known or suspected exposure to COVID-19 must have two negative results for COVID-19 at least 48 hours apart to be cleared to participate in any classes or campus activities. Consistent with CDC’s recommendations, if t这里 is an increased campus or community spread of the virus, expanded testing of the student 和/or employee population may be performed.

Individuals are instructed to provide any testing results obtained or medical documentation for clearance to return to campus to the MyHealth@School Center for evaluation.

How frequently will students, faculty, and staff be subject to screening questions 和 temperature checks?

Random Symptom Checkers will stop individuals and check their symptoms in any part of the campus. Checking will include a series of symptom-related questions and temperature checks. Random Symptom Checkers will operate twice a week in the mornings. If it becomes necessary, Random Symptom Checkers will operate all five days of a week in the mornings. Random temperature and symptom checks will be conducted at the residence halls. These measures will be ramped up to daily checks if t这里 is an increase of campus 和/or community spread of the virus.
